Magnetic North
$13.99 (NTCD02)
Ian Tamblyn
This collection of instrumental music blended with environmental sounds began with my fascination with the north shore of Lake Superior in the early seventies. I became interested in exploring the concept of a spiritual north perhaps in a similar vein as Glenn Gould's "Idea of North" series he did for the CBC, except I hadn't heard of Glenn Gould's series until much later. In 1984 I was invited north as a writer in residence on a scientific trip to the Chuckchi Sea, north of the Bering Strait, to study he feeding habits of whales and walrus. The experience changed my life and when I returned I commenced this project. It was five years in the making. Pieces on this album range from the Nahanni River, Kodiak Island, Haida Gwaii, Lake Superior, Lancaster Sound and Chukchi Sea. Nominated for Juno for Best Instrumental Album in 1990. Currently out of stock.

Ariel
$7.88 (20132P)
Jerry Goodman
Review by William Ruhlmann (Allmusic.com)
For his second album of the 1980s, Goodman may have been prevailed upon or may have decided himself to give his fans something more familiar. "Ariel" leaves little doubt that its primary performer is a violinist. The background music, while often demonstrative, is still background music, supporting Goodman's soaring runs. And on "Topanga Waltz," there is a definite rock feel that recalls Mahavishnu, while "Rockers" has sections that would make you think some arena-rock band was playing. Goodman is still experimenting and mixing styles. "Broque," for example, has not only Celtic but also gypsy elements to go with its rock passages. But the album as a whole steps back from an emphasis on composition to allow for a display of sheer performing chops. Currently out of stock.

Between Two Worlds
$14.99 (20172P)
Patrick O`Hearn
Patrick O'Hearn is the e-music veteran's veteran. "Between Two Worlds" is his 2nd release on the long-ago discontinued Private Music label created by Peter Bauman(Tangerine Dream)in the mid-80s. It is typical of O'Hearn's style. This CD refines the ideas he began on his seminal debut "Ancient Dreams". Very collectable!

Dry Well, The
$14.99 (TWALT1)
Tim Walters
The Dry Well is a dark and emotionally charged musical work, created by extreme digital processing of acoustic sound sources.
The first three tracks are based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian legend that may be the oldest surviving work of literature. They evoke ritual, mythic journey, and the transition from the material to the spiritual realm.
The last three tracks, by contrast, are based on the formal idea of achieving as much as possible with severely limited means. Every sound in the three pieces originated from a kalimba (African thumb piano) built by one Molly Clark, age 8. From this child's instrument, a wealth of sound was created, gradually moving away from "natural" kalimba tone and toward the realm of pure noise.
