EtoshaETOSHA - Private Music In The Land Of Dry Water: Sanford Ponder

Sanford Ponder Tomorrow and yesterday...

What was the first sound in the world? Who played the first note? When in our history did the wind and rain, sun and sand, rushing river and sky-tumbling thunder teach us to think beyond ourselves, and give birth to music?
That innocence is long behind us. Log drums, gourds, rattles and edge-cut reeds, all our imitations of the raw glory of nature, have been replaced by tamer, more predictable sounds. But go far enough and you return to the start. To grow up, truly grow up, is to regain the best of your beginnings. We have come full circle. The new technology of digital recording makes us magicians; we can sample the sounds of the world itself, the subtle, secret voices of cave and sea and forest, and make our music not in imitation of nature, but with the pure grace of nature itself.
Sanford Ponder is both a leading figure in computer synthesis and a prolific session musician, with credits ranging from Lou Rawls and Kurtis Blow to the soundtrack for the film Terms of Endearment. For Etosha, he sought out a myriad of natural sounds, from which he developed and enhanced as much as composed-this very special music, using a Fairlight CMI (one of the world's most sophisticated digital synthesizers) and a 32-track digital recorder....yesterday and tomorrow.
