Atlantis:Ancient Civilization of the Atlantic (10,000 B.C.-1628 B.C.)

Of all the ancient or lost civilizations, none has captivated the imagination more than Atlantis.

Everything that has ever been dreamed, thought or speculated about this mythic place land leads back to the original source: Timaeus and Critias, a dialogue by Plato. The tale of Atlantis had been passed down to Plato from his great uncle, Dropides, who in turn had heard it from the Athenian statesman, Solon. During a visit to Egypt, Solon met an old priest who related the story based on information contained in 'The House Of Books' (possibly the library at Alexandria).

Throughout history, Atlantis has been placed in three different locations: in the Caribbean near Bimini, in the mid-Atlantic near the Azores Islands and in the Mediterranean near Crete on the island of Thera. Atlantis has been described as a circular city, with concentric walls surrounding the city center with each wall separated by alternating concentric moats and strips of land. Two waterways lead in and out of the city, one to the sea and the other into the city through a series of golden gates. Much has been said about the civilization of Atlantis, a great deal of it fanciful, but some of it may soon be proven true.

During the last 25 years a group of archaeologists has been quietly unearthing the greatest archeological discovery of all time. Buried under 100 feet of volcanic dust on the island of Thera is an intact city of such magnitude that it will take 300 years to excavate it. Even more startling is what they are finding in the city: Four-storey buildings decorated with ornate frescoes, with nearly modern hot-and-cold-water plumbing and elaborate irrigation canals and exquisite artifacts all matching the Atlantis described in Plato's dialogue. The destruction of Atlantis in "a day and a night" also matches the cataclysmic destruction of Thera in 1628 B.C. by a volcano 10 times the size of Krakatoa.

Plato had place the destruction of Atlantis approximately 10,000 years before the time of his writing of it. Some argue that Solon may have mistaken the Egyptian numeral for '10,000' for the numeral '1000' therby placing the destruction of Atlantis 1000 years before Plato, which would corrsspond the date of the destruction of Thera. Others argue that the confusion merely results from exaggeration and misinterpretation of a thousand-year-old tale passed down to Plato: that an island became a continent, a thousand years became ten thousand years and the Mediterranean became the Atlantic. Only time will reveal this greatest of Ancient Mysteries.
