ANCIENT MYSTERIES

Artist's Comment

My initial interest in this project started a number of years ago when I first heard about the lost continent of Lemuria. Later, as I began to think of a follow-up to my first project, "Pangaea", the idea seemed logical and intriguing. As I delved further into the subject I became more and more fascinated not only with mythical "lost" continents but also with ancient civilizations, which, some sources speculated had descended from them. Writing the music was equally fascinating and profound. My emotions during composition were unlike any I had previously felt -- a strong sense of longing coupled with a haunting feeling of mystery and awe.

To some, the idea of lost continents may seem far-fetched or even preposterous; nevertheless, as in the case of Atlantis this myth has persisted. Whether as an allegory of an utopia, or of the Western notion of an Eden, the idea of long-lost continents and lost civilizations whose people were keepers of ancient wisdom lingers on.

Throughout this project I have tried to keep an open mind about the various new ideas I have encountered. I consciously chose to use digital technology and computers to create the music, as well as all of the layout, design and enhanced imagery for this e-album. Digital technologies have given us more access to information, both past and present, and the ability to create new realities with that information. In effect, I had to become a kind of musical archaeologist, discoving new and hybrid instrument sounds and then present them in larger-than-life multi-media settings, made possible with digital instruments.

What I have unearthed has deepened my sensitivity and understanding of not only our ancient past, but also the present. These ancient civilizations and their ideas are powerful realities that exert a subtle yet profound influence on the world around us. I hope that this awe and mystery along with a deep sense of connectedness to our ancient past will be communicated.
